I had a workout room. It was small, but nice; the only issue is that I hardly ever used it. I maybe used it 1-2 times a month, if that. I wanted to workout at home but it’s so boring! Once I became serious about blogging, I suddenly had a camera, equipment, computer stuff, and cords everywhere. I’m the person who needs a proper spot for everything in my house. It’s how I stay organized.
I was trying to write from the kitchen table, but I had so many distractions. I tried to write from my bed, but I felt like a lazy slob. I tried to write from our guest bedroom, but it’s far and I felt disconnected there.
So after a lot of thought I decided to get rid of my workout room and turn it onto an office. I had convinced myself I needed a workout room but I really preferred going to workout classes anyway. Even with a tv, music, and phone distractions, I found working out at home so boring.
So I took the room apart and sold everything inside. Everything but the floor mirror. What’s funny is that as soon as I sold all my equipment, I gained 5 pounds overnight! What? My body was clearly mad at me for getting rid of the workout room and rebelling.
To start with, I removed the ceiling fan and added this gorgeous light from Ballard Designs…
…and then moved my sassy mannequin Alexis into the room.
Before I even started decorating the office, I could tell that this was the perfect room for me to write in! The morning sun streams in and it’s just so peaceful. I don’t have much grey in our home even though I really like it, so I looked for a grey rug and found the Safavieh Grey Moroccan Rug from Amazon. So far this rug has shed the least amount of any wool rug I’ve owned. It’s a 7 foot square that fits perfectly, but many sizes are available.
Then I started looking for black desks, I knew I wanted it floating in the room. I wanted to face the doorway looking into my favorite room, the dining room.
It was hard finding a desk that wasn’t too large for the room, I love the legs on this desk.
I ordered this custom tufted chair from Ballard Designs, and while I waited about 6 weeks for it to arrive I used an extra chair from the guest room.
I sent off for a zillion fabric samples. I have a fabric sample drawer. It’s so handy! I’m drawn to blues and turquoise shades in bathrooms and bedrooms. With the office I was craving greys and blues, so I committed to the chair in linen peacock. Non-refundable custom orders are so stressful!
I found the Asher Flax Armchair from Pier 1 and ordered a pillow cover in the same shade as my desk chair.
I love this red mirror a lot, it was in the workout room and it’s the perfect size for the space. But I want a gold mirror in here, and I looked around everywhere for a gold leaner mirror the same size with no luck. They were either too big or too small. So spray paint it is!
I used my favorite gold spray paint by Rust-oleum. It’s the perfect shade of gold! Tip: always buy twice the amount of spray paint you think you need. It almost always takes more than you realize. It’s such a hassle to stop a project to buy more spray paint. Keep the receipt, you can always return unused cans of spray paint. I lightly sanded, cleaned, primed, and sprayed away. I hope I don’t miss the red, but like my husband said, I can always paint it back red one day. He is so wise.
Ewww…..ignore the garage. You’ll see a story about our a clean, organized, and updated garage in like 2 years…it’s our ultimate fantasy to have a perfect garage. I found an old vase that wanted to be gold too.
I have a hole to patch up where the tv was mounted, which will eventually get done. Gotta find the drywall guy’s number. It’s around here somewhere. His name is Perfecto. Seriously, how can you not hire a guy with that name-it has perfection in it! He’s so sick of us, he keeps thinking “Why can’t you just leave your walls alone?”
I’m just learning photography. I’m learning it very slowly, I might add, but it definitely bums me out to have to buy prints off Etsy. We’ve traveled to Paris many times (and other parts of Europe) and I’ve gotten some really great photos with my phone or a basic camera, but none are quality enough to really enlarge big. Once you start learning photography, you become horrified at how your old photos you thought looked good really aren’t that good at all. The D’Orsay clock speaks to me. Never hang art unless it speaks to you. Art is so personal.
Now, I’m finished for the most part. I’ve added some finishing touches: another pillow and my Rosenthal vase…. I have a big crush on these little vases!
Alexis is making friends with Mr. D’Orsay.
A few other items I used on my desk are the very heavenly Casbah scented gold hammered candle, The Little Dictionary of Fashion and Dior by Dior book. I love using books in my decor, they look cute. It gives height where needed, protects furniture, and bonus: I love to read them!
Just the essentials, I can’t think straight in a cluttered room.
What do you think? I’m loving it. I’ll get so much writing done in here!
I really want to add french doors now. Once I finish up some other projects, I’m excited to look into that. I’m thinking late summer or maybe fall.
Luckily, the workout room won’t be missed because I’ve found a spinning class I love at Zyn22. Guess it all worked out (ha ha) in the end!
